Staph infection

The Web Ask Dave Taylor

How to avoid a hospital stay and a Staph infection. Is it dangerous to be a patient in the hospital? Have you contracted an infection in the hospital? I have. I read an article in the June 2005 paper of the AARP about the most dangerous place to be if you are sick. Yes, it is the hospital. This article talks about a man who went to surgery and expected to be in the hospital for only a few days. He actually spent almost three weeks from a bacterial infection. These staph infections are more common than you think. As a matter of fact it happened to me years ago. I had an ectopic pregnancy and was taken to the hospital by my husband. I went into surgery so they could explore what was the problem. They removed one ovary and one fallopian tube and sent my husband and daughter home 100 miles away. I woke up during the night and ask what happened to my baby. They said I don’t know and we are so busy we don’t have time to check your chart. I told them my IV had infiltrated. They said just leave it because it is almost out. The fluid was running into my tissue not the vein. They didn’t know that I was a nurse. They were embarrassed when they found out. I was so anxious to get out of that hospital that I managed to sit up in the chair after a couple of days so when the doctor made rounds I could talk him into letting me go home. He only let me go home because I was a nurse and he felt I knew what signs to look for if I had a problem. When I got home I realized I had pleurisy because they didn’t turn, cough and deep breathe me after surgery. I also discovered my urine started to burn real bad and I had pain. I went to a clinic near my home and they said I had a staph infection in my bladder I had picked up at the hospital.

I always had high standards in my nursing career even in the nursing homes I worked in. I saw first hand a lot of the problems even back then. I know the problems are much worse now. Please be very careful if you need to put a loved one in a nursing home. Ask them to show you what their rating was that past year for state inspection. Talk to others that have loved ones in that home. A Staph infection and other infections contracted in a hospital or nursing home is a common thing now so protect yourself. They say it is dangerous just to touch the nursing station desk area without washing your hands afterwards. Be very careful of getting a staph infection and others things you might pick up at nursing homes and hospitals.

I just saw recently on TV that the biggest problem facing hospitals today is not enough staff. There is a real serious shortage of nurses. One nurse can be assigned 10 –12 patients a shift for total care. This is to heavy of a load. When nurses have more to do than they can handle mistakes can occur. This can cost lives. When I was working in the nursing home I had nurses aids go to dinner and never come back at times.

The AARP article I mentioned also said that about 90,000 Americans die each year from infections they contract at a hospital stay. Can you believe that? Unless it is an emergency always check out the hospital and the doctor. Go to the American medical Association for info. The best thing to do to try to avoid having to go to the hospital at all is to be very careful when driving. Watch those cell phones and other distractions. Please don’t fall asleep. They covered that subject on TV recently. Don’t take unnecessary risks. Start taking care of your body. Make little changes until you accomplish the goal. We as humans don’t consider something until we have a problem. Change that thinking. Plan for the tomorrow. What you do today will affect your health tomorrow. If you can get past the resistance to change you can make it happen. Do you want to be healthy or have surgery, radiation and take lots of expensive pills that mask your symptoms and make you think for a while you are getting better? The chemical pills have terrible side effects. Hospital stays will greatly increase you chance of contracting a staph infection. So Avoid them and let's do what it takes to improve health. We really can avoid getting a staph infection and many others health problems. Ready to make that change. Ready, Set, Go. Read on.

Read the Maker’s Diet. Just try to gradually get off the American diet. It will kill you. I am an American that weights 114 pounds. I have never had a weight problem. My husband and son are also slim. We are not perfect at our diet but we work at it. We eat a lot of organic food. I am in my 50’s and I have a teenage son. Most people say I look like I am in my 40’s. I was very ill for years until recently. I had gotten 13 silver fillings (mercury) when I was 13 years old. The next year I became anemic. My fillings leached out and caused Candida. I almost died. My desire is to help others on their journey back to restore health. Antioxidants

Just today 01/25/07 on the Today show I saw a special on MRSA bacteria which is a type of staph infection. It seems this super bug can be picked up out in general society and is becoming more resistant to antibiotics. This is because of the overuse of antibiotics. This strain may start as a skin infection. 125,ooo people are hospitalized each year from MRSA. If you develop a skin infection that doesn't heal get checked. Don't take antibiotics for a common cold and other minor reasons.
